Hibiki 21 (100th Anniversary Edition)
Japan's Suntory is celebrating a monumental milestone this year—the 100th anniversary of its whiskey legacy. Founded by Shinjiro Torii in 1923, Suntory set out to "gather Japan's natural resources and craftsmanship to create a unique Japanese whiskey." A century later, this vision continues to flourish, and the Hibiki 21: 100th Anniversary Edition stands as a testament to Suntory's enduring commitment to excellence.
A Tribute to Mastery and Tradition
The Hibiki 21: 100th Anniversary Edition is a special creation by Suntory’s master blenders, marking this significant occasion with a blend that highlights the harmony and craftsmanship that have defined Hibiki for decades. More than 30 types of whiskey, sourced from the acclaimed Yamazaki, Hakushu, and Chita distilleries, are meticulously blended to create this exquisite expression.
The Charm of Mizunara Oak
One of the standout features of the Hibiki 21: 100th Anniversary Edition is its use of Japanese Mizunara oak. Known for its challenging and rewarding properties, Mizunara imparts a complex, nuanced flavor profile that sets this whiskey apart. As Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo explains, this edition celebrates the centenary with a blend that harnesses the distinctive qualities of Mizunara, creating a whiskey that truly embodies Suntory's dedication to craftsmanship.
The Legacy of Hibiki
Hibiki, meaning "resonance" in Japanese, was launched in 1989 to commemorate Suntory's philosophy of living in harmony with people and nature. It is a noble blend of innumerous malt and grain whiskeys from Suntory's acclaimed Yamazaki, Hakushu, and Chita distilleries. These whiskeys are meticulously blended to create a sense of "wa"—a harmonious unity that unveils a full orchestra of flavors and aromas.
Elegant Design and Symbolism
The bottle design of the Hibiki 21: 100th Anniversary Edition is a work of art in itself. Adorned with the centenary logo and inspired by the concept of golden quicksand, the design evokes the serene beauty of a Japanese sunrise, symbolizing life, vitality, and the passage of time. This elegant presentation invites you to savor each moment, reflecting the timeless nature of Suntory's whiskey-making tradition.
Tasting Notes: A Symphony of Flavors

- Taste: A harmonious blend of subtle and sweet floral notes, spices, and Japanese sandalwood, creating a balanced and refined palate.
- Finish: Long and serene, with lingering aromas of spices and Mizunara wood.
A Century of Craftsmanship
Hibiki 21: 100th Anniversary Edition not only celebrates a hundred years of Suntory’s legacy but also showcases the artistry of Japanese whiskey blending. The Yamazaki and Hakushu distilleries contribute their unique flavors, while Chita adds a smooth, delicate touch, resulting in a blend that resonates with the essence of Japanese whiskey.
My Personal Thoughts,
I think that Hibiki 21 100th Anniversary is quite overpriced and it deters a lot of buyers initially. (myself included)
The difference in normal Hibiki 21 and Hibiki 21 100th anniversary is the type of oak it is aged in. Normal Hibiki 21: Sherry Oak, Hibiki 21 100th anniversary (Mizunara Oak).
However, after receiving the bottle itself and doing some research, my opinion on it did improve as it is still a stunning piece.
I will recommend this whisky to the true collectors of Suntory products, not because of price appreciation, but just to appreciate the beauty and crack open one for the special joyous occasion.
(Some people just have to finish their stash of collection, I completely understand)
