The Hibiki 21 Year Japanese Blended Whisky (Hibiki 21) is seen as the epitome of luxury from the House of Suntory Whisky. As perhaps the face of Hibiki whisky – which itself is dubbed by Suntory Whisky as the ‘Paragon of Japanese whisky’ – Hibki 21 features a stunning black label adorned with gold lettering, boldly declaring the name of this legendary whisky, as well as the kanji for ‘Hibiki’. Attention to detail is on full display, as the bottle stopper continues the sleek, black motif, enveloping the Hibiki kanji. As a whisky that is revered amongst the entire whisky community, it simply cannot be outclassed. Adorned with innumerable accolades, see for yourself why this whisky is so celebrated.

 

Tasting Notes:

The below tasting notes are inclusive of what one may detect on the nose, palate, and finish of the Hibiki 21 – but are by no means inclusive. These notes are to be used as a guide in helping to make a personal determination to buy this product.

 

Nose

Hibiki 21 is a whisky that deserves to sit in your glass and fully open up and should not be sipped until the aroma completely unfolds. Simply a recommendation on my part, but you can thank me later. The nose is dense, rich, sweet, full, and completely captivating. Much like a flower blooming over time, the nose unfolds into a ripe, luscious mix of strawberries and blackberries. These fruits present as those which have been cooked and stewed. Adding to the richness is a delicious peach cobbler dessert. Despite this rich profile, also present are some brighter notes of apple and vanilla. And last but not least, that revered Japanese Mizunara oak makes yet another appearance with incense and a slight hint of sandalwood.

 

Palate

The palate on the Hibiki 21 is a perfect representation of what blended whisky should be. The palate is delicate, savory, luscious, and absolutely moreish. The flavors have graduated and elevated even more so than they were on the nose. Sweet and velvety, the taste of cinnamon and baked goods coats the palate and lead into those ripened fruits from the nose. Present again are those spicy incense notes that are a tell-tale sign of Mizunara oak influence.

 

Finish

The finish is long and satisfying – completely fitting of such a heavy hitter whisky. Sweetness lingers and reminisces on the ripe fruits and Mizunara incense and spice. Many whiskies may not leave you speechless, but the Hibiki 21 speaks for itself and will undoubtedly keep you sipping. Be sure to savor this whisky, though, as it is perhaps one of – if not, the – most savory Japanese whiskies out there. The Hibiki 21 is extremely versatile and can be enjoyed on its own and even with or after many meals.
